Artist's Comments

I made this while part of a blacksmithing club.

it is about 3/4 scale due to lack of material and while the spiraling looks cool it is actually due to the furnace not getting hot enough to weld the metal together. the texture was made by torquing the end (while glowing orange) almost to the point of tearing. then quenching in water.

What were you trying to make here? It looks like a sword, but in your description your talking about forge welding. Are you trying to make damascus or something?

it's a sai

Basically a dagger sized, single handed trident with a greatly elongated middle tip.

I would love to learn how to make Damascus. Unfortunately, all we had was just scrap mild steel, and the furnace at the time couldn't get hot enough.

Ahah! I just wasn't understanding why you were forge welding. Try using a single piece of steel and use hot chissels to cut two sections on either side. Cut to where you want the handle to meet the blade. Shape those sections into the two side points. You might have to forge weld a little bit here, depending on how you cut, but there will be a lot less material and you won't need as much heat. Then shape the remaining middle parts into the elongated middle and the handle. Don't forget your flux when forge welding! Does that make sense to ya?

Ah I see, yep, makes perfect sense.

The only stock we had at the time was 1/4" rod. Also I was trying to get an organic/grown look out of it.

That's cool. It's an entirely different matter if you're trying to get a specific look out of it. Good stuff man!!
